the bunny feeder
last night on our evening stroll we passed an older lady. she barely saw us and we barely saw her due to the sun being asleep and the lack of street lights. she had a thick accent (kind of german sounding) but i'm not sure where she was from. i think we startled her a little as she was quietly walking along with an empty grocery sack. we said hello to her and she started talking to us and i never thought we'd get away. cute things i discovered based on our conversation go a little like this....
*every evening she goes to the same empy field with vegetable scraps like the ends from her romaine lettuce she chops up to feed the millions of bunnies who hop around the neighborhood.
*she also brings them fresh water.
*according to her the bunnies wait for her in that same spot every evening because they know she will be showing up with food and water.
*she also feeds/waters stray cats.
*when the cats appear to not have a home she takes them in then the people who live on the end of the street volunteer to pay for the kitties to get fixed.
*those same people have rescued stray dogs in the area.
*either those people or this lady put signs on the community mailbox to say an animal has been found in case someone in the neighborhood has lost it.
*one time one of the kitties she rescued had 5 kittens which were adopted out.
*she has a granddaughter that has done the same sort of sweet stuff for strays and in doing so ended up with a hefty credit card bill which the lady paid.
these are all the facts i can remember right now but i'm sure there were more.
we couldn't really get much of a word in but i didn't mind. there was just lots of head nodding and oh that's nice...coming from us.
i'm so glad this lady takes care of the neighborhood wildlife and strays. it's great to know there are so many animal lovers in our neighborhood.

Awww, how nice. My dad is the same way. He cuts carrots and apples every evening and takes them down to the rabbits. He has rescued so many animals too. I pick up dogs all the time. I love that there are so many kind hearted people out there. They really make the difference:)
ReplyDeleteAw, that's really cute.
ReplyDeleteJennifer...it's so refreshing to know that amongst the chaos in the world there are shining moments because of good people that do what they can to make a difference.
ReplyDeleteOf course I love this post...anything that helps animals is my favorite. I wish there were more people who ran the neighborhood at night feeding, watering, and rescuing animals.
ReplyDeleteI love when people are soo generous and helpful to strays and other animals. We are adopting a stray kitty outside in our neighborhood. Mia named "her" Princess, until we found out that "she" was a male so the name got changed to Prince. And I new your mom would love this post too! :)
